Fascia is contractile connective tissue which holds the body together. It is present in every part of the body and wraps around everything including muscles, tendons, ligaments, blood vessels, and the nervous system. Fascia’s flexible structure is composed of a lattice-like arrangement of collagen fibers. When functioning optimally, fascia is crucial to overall body stability and the smooth, pain-free movement of muscles and joints. However, when fascia loses the ability to stretch due to mechanoreceptors- chemicals which are involved in the body’s adaptive, protective response to trauma- it causes pain and loss of mobility, and may even lead to organ dysfunction.
Fascial Counterstrain (FCS) was developed by board certified orthopedic specialist, Brian Tuckey PT, OCS, JSCCI. It is foundational work that is cutting-edge, hands-on, effective and gentle. Every organ, nerve, artery, muscle, bone, ligament, tendon, vein and lymphatic vessel in the human body can actively spasm and produce pain in a natural, protective response to injury. FCS embraces the concept of holistic and osteopathic medicine in that it addresses the body as a whole, not just the surface musculoskeletal presentation. By normalizing the muscular tension, vascular drainage, blood flow, and neural input from contracted fascia, FCS maximizes the body’s intrinsic ability to heal. Multi-system evaluation and treatment is the key to correcting chronic health conditions. Consequently, FCS is a technique for virtually all of the body’s systems, including neural, arterial, venous, lymphatic, visceral, brain, sympathetic nervous system, parasympathetic nervous system, periosteal (bone), musculoskeletal, and ligamentous.
